NJ Professor and Dating Author Launches Sorority Workshop on Self-Love and Dating

OCTOBER 2024 — Author, marketing professional, and professor Brianna McCabe is connecting with sororities across New Jersey to launch “Sisters Before Misters: The Self-Love Chapter,” a workshop that reinforces the importance of fostering a deeper sense of self before entering a romantic relationship.

With an official kick-off at the Delta Phi Epsilon chapter at Rider University on Sunday, October 20, McCabe is using her decade of dating mistakes — coupled with her awareness of the role that her lack of self-love played in her dating decisions — to define self-love, provide tips on how to harness it through various mindfulness techniques, and offer in-depth knowledge on its influence on dating.

“Understanding the fundamentals of self-love is information that transcends all ages,” shares McCabe, author of The Red Flags I’ve (Repeatedly) Ignored, “but it’s something that needs to be heard during those critical college years — especially as people are entering more mature, established relationships and entering a new terrain all-together. My goal is to help attendees find value within themselves first and prevent a reliance on others for validation — which is something I wish I was made aware of when I was in college.”

Throughout the presentation, McCabe explains how self-love directly impacts one’s ability to choose compatible partners, establish healthy boundaries, and recognize red flags. She then further dives into four main factors that she has identified as causing individuals to rationalize red flags, leveraging her ROOT acronym:

  • Rom-coms and other forms of entertainment

  • Oppression of trauma

  • Obsolete self-love

  • Timelines and societal pressures

“The psychological phenomenon that occurs when presented with red flags and deliberately choosing to turn a blind eye to them is quite complex,” explains McCabe, “but really, at its core, is a failure to believe that your relationship with your own self trumps all others.”

The presentation also includes an interactive component where several volunteers are asked to share stories on specific red flags, including lack of communication and cheating, which McCabe then revisits towards the end of the presentation to explain how self-love could help prevent attendees from ignoring those red flags.

Following her presentation at Rider, McCabe received positive feedback from the sorority members via Instagram comments:

“Although I wasn’t in a sorority myself, I recognize the power that sorority members have in really creating cultural shifts on campus,” says McCabe. “My goal is to create this ripple effect across the nation, one college at a time.”

The next stop on her sorority tour is at Monmouth University on Wednesday, October 23 as she connects with Alpha Omicron Pi members.
